How much will it cost?

To a great extent, that depends on what you want or hope to achieve!

Families vary, of course, but you may well have two parents, four grandparents, eight great grandparents, sixteen great great grandparents etc. Records held online broadly cover events back to the early 19th century, so the potential complexity is fairly obvious.

However, don’t be put off by the scale of the project because the chances are that you have a more clearly defined goal in mind. Before we start, we will clarify what you really want to find out and how far back. This is your project, not mine!

I will happily do a couple of hours’ work for free, in order to check whether or not this looks like a possible project. After that, if it seems likely that we have enough information to start work, we can discuss how to refine it and what you actually want at the far end. Most of my customers, but not all, actually want a written record in the form of a book (see photo). This is the sort of thing that can be read and shared within the family or, as happens quite frequently, becomes a gift to a family member.

I charge £15/hour and always agree, in advance, a reporting and invoicing system. We would agree to keep in touch weekly / fortnightly etc, with updates on how the work is going. There will be no financial surprises. However, I rather hope that there might be some historical ones!

And if you want to do all the research yourself but don’t know where to start, I’m more than happy, for the same hourly rate, to help and guide you through the sorts of processes that you need to understand in order to research yourself.

I look forward to hearing from you.
